We place a premium on creating a fun and family-friendly environment so that your child will never be hesitant to visit his or her pediatric dentist for any needed dental treatments. One of these effective dental services that we offer in our office is root canal treatment.

Root Canal Treatment for Kids

Unlike the hard, outer surface of the tooth, its interior is filled with soft pulp that’s full of blood vessels and nerves. If this pulp becomes infected, it can cause the tooth to die off. Your Chicago and Glenview kids dentist can utilize x-rays to confirm if the pulp is diseased and if it is, we can take action by performing root canal treatment in order to save the tooth.

While you’re assuredly familiar with the fact that root canal treatment is used for adults, you may not know that root canal treatment is also utilized for children as well. While primary (baby) teeth will typically fall out on their own, there are reasons as to why it may be recommended to save these teeth for as long as possible. Primary teeth are vital for many different reasons. They can:

  • Make it easier for your child to eat properly.
  • Allow your child to speak clearly.
  • Act as guides for your child’s permanent teeth to come in at their appropriate spots.
  • Give your child a healthy self-image.

Our Treatment Options

If your child’s in need of root canal treatment, your Chicago and Glenview pediatric dentist can offer the following treatment options:

  • Indirect Pulp Treatment: If the pulp damage is minimal, we can remove most of the decay while keeping the pulp, apply an antibiotic, and then seal the tooth up again.
  • Pulpotomy: If the decay is limited to the upper portion of the pulp, we may perform a pulpotomy, which involves removing the damaged part of the pulp, stabilizing the remaining healthy portion, and then disinfecting and sealing the tooth up.

We’ll exhaust our options to try and save the tooth, but in severe cases, the tooth may need to be removed. In these circumstances, we’ll have to fit your child with a space maintainer to keep the surrounding teeth from shifting into the open gap and interfering with the permanent tooth that’ll emerge later on.

Does My Child Need Root Canal Treatment?

Children may require root canal treatment when bacteria or tooth decay infects a tooth’s pulp. When the pulp is infected, permanent damage can be caused to a tooth. However, since you won’t exactly be able to tell when this has occurred, you’ll need to look for signs and symptoms. These include:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Toothaches
  • Sharp tooth pain
  • Broken or fractured teeth

If you notice any of these symptoms, please take your child to his or her pediatric dentist as soon as possible in order to see if root canal treatment may be necessary.
