What Type of Braces Are Right For Your Child?

Many kids will need braces at some point between the ages of 9 and 14. Here at our office, we offer a variety of both fixed and removable orthodontic appliances, so if you thought that traditional metal braces were your only option, you’ve got another thing coming!

Metal Braces:Traditional Metal Braces.

Though we do offer a variety of treatment options, traditional metal braces continue to be the most common type of fixed orthodontic appliances. By fixed, we mean that this type of braces are attached the the teeth and aren’t taken off until treatment is completed. Metal braces consist of metal bands that wrap around your back molars, and smaller metal brackets that are stuck to the front surfaces of your other teeth. These braces require periodic tightening so that your teeth can gradually be straightened properly. These braces are a good option because they are extremely reliable, effective and economical. If you are looking to go through a less visible orthodontic process, we have other options that could be better for you.

Ceramic Braces:

Ceramic Braces.

Clear ceramic braces are similar to metal braces, but are far less noticeable. The main difference is that the brackets on the front of your teeth are in this case made of a translucent ceramic material that is made to blend in with the tooth’s natural shade. This can be great for teens and adults who are a bit more concerned about the look of their mouth. We have several types of ceramic braces available, and our updated technology makes this an easy and efficient process. Though ceramic braces look great, keep in mind that the ceramic brackets can be less durable than metal, and normally cost more. For many of our patients, the pros still outweigh the cons. Decide what aspects are most important to you and let us know!

Lingual Braces:

Lingual Braces.

Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth rather than in front, and are made to be truly invisible. Lingual braces are a great cosmetic alternative for those who need their teeth straightened, but don’t want to go through an extremely visible process. Actually, these braces work the same way metal braces do, but they are hidden since they are attached to the tongue-side of the teeth. Keep in mind that lingual braces aren’t right for everyone, because special training is required to install them, and they are significantly more expensive than classic braces. They also take a bit more time for the patient to get used to, and may be a bit of a longer treatment process. But if you want the least visible type of fixed appliance, you may want to ask your doctor about lingual braces!
