An Overview of Orthodontics
Your smile is often an indicator of your confidence, but misaligned teeth can quickly become a confidence buster. Here at Yummy Dental, we understand the difficulties that crooked teeth or malocclusions present for children and adults. The good news is that we can help. Orthodontics is the treatment of issues such as malocclusions by applying light and constant force in order to guide teeth into more appropriate positions and gently reshape the bone. We have a number of appliances to help do this, and a consultation will help us determine which treatment is best for your needs.
Who Benefits From Orthodontic Treatment?
Bite problems often start to present themselves around the age of seven, when orthodontic treatment can begin. At this stage, we can use the natural process of growth to guide the teeth into better alignment, or we can start preparations for treatment a little further down the road. This is the prime age to start treating problems before they become more serious.
However, the teeth never lose the ability to be realigned. Even fully mature teeth can be moved into better positions with the right appliances. You’re never too old to benefit from orthodontic treatment if it is necessary. In fact, 20 percent of orthodontic patients these days are adults. We have many discreet appliance options, and before treatment, we will carefully examine and treat for any gum disease.
Common Orthodontic Problems We Can Treat
Orthodontists are educated and trained to treat a number of different conditions. Many of these are malocclusions, or a misalignment of the teeth when the mouth is closed. Common problems that we can help patients address include:
- Excessive overbite
- Open bite
- Excessive spacing
Treatment for these types of issues typically includes the use of braces or aligners in order to gently move the teeth into proper alignment. Because the teeth are held in place by the periodontal ligament—a structure which retains some flexibility, similar to a hammock—moving the teeth isn’t as difficult as many people might suspect.
Braces: An Orthodontist's Tools of the Trade
Most people automatically think of metal braces in relation to the orthodontist, and these people are not wrong. Our traditional metal braces continue to be a popular and effective method for straightening the teeth. Advances in treatments mean that these are not the only options patients have, however. We offer a variety of orthodontic appliances, including:
- Metal braces: traditional method for straightening teeth. Brackets are made of a non magnetic metal
- Ceramic braces: clear ceramic brackets that are held together with a slim archwire. They are far more subtle than metal braces.
- Lingual braces: similar to traditional braces, but the brackets attach to the back of the teeth. This treatment is even more subtle than ceramic braces.
- Aligners: sets of molded trays that progressively move the teeth into place over time. Perfectly clear with only the most keen observers noticing this treatment.
Every situation is different, which is why our orthodontist will carefully consult with you to determine which option will best suit your individual needs. The length of treatment varies by individual, but it is common for braces or aligners to be worn for about a year.
Caring for Your Teeth After Treatment
Once your course of treatment is complete, care for your teeth doesn’t automatically end. In fact, if you have been wearing braces or aligners, post-treatment care is extremely important for retention, or the ability for the teeth to remain in proper alignment. This is typically done through the use of a retainer to keep the teeth in place until new bone and ligament can form. This is how you ensure your new, beautiful smile remains beautiful for the rest of your life.
