Beginning Orthodontic Treatment in Chicago

The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends that all children visit an orthodontist by the age of seven. At this age, any developing issue can be detected, and early treatment can alleviate the severity of the orthodontic problem. While an initial screening is recommended earlier on, most treatment doesn’t begin until adolescence. Usually, by the ages of 11 to 13, kids will have lost all of their baby teeth and the permanent ones have come in. This allows your children’s orthodontist to evaluate any potential orthodontic problems and begin correcting any bad bites, tooth misalignment, or spacing issues.

Why Adolescent Treatment?

Some people worry that braces for kids or teenagers is fruitless because the teeth are still moving. In fact, the opposite is true; because a child’s body is still developing during adolescence, it is significantly easier to treat orthodontic issues. Through our state-of-the-art orthodontic appliances and treatments, we can improve the appearance and function of teeth in a shorter period of time. At older ages, after the patient’s face and jaw are fully developed, many orthodontic conditions actually become more costly and difficult to treat.
Finally, there’s also a social element in receiving braces at this age. Many other kids are also getting orthodontic treatment during this time of their lives, so there’s more of a willingness to go through the same process as everyone else. Adults often worry about the social impact of wearing braces at an older age. While we recommend adolescent treatment, we also offer a variety of discrete braces for adults and adolescents, including clear braces and clear aligners.

Our Orthodontic Treatment Options

After your pediatric orthodontist takes pictures and X-rays of your mouth, along with the possibility of impressions of your bite, our staff can develop a treatment plan that works best for you. Some of the orthodontic treatment options that we provide include the following:

Metal Braces In Chicago

Metal braces.
These types of braces are the traditional ones that people are most familiar with. The benefit of modern metal braces is that they’re smaller, lighter, and more comfortable now than ever. They even allow for customized options like colored elastic ties on the brackets.

Clear Braces In Chicago

Clear braces.
Clear braces function like metal braces. The major difference between them, however, is that the brackets of these braces are made of ceramic or other composite materials that blend in with your teeth. This allows for a more discreet form of orthodontic treatment.

Clear Aligners For Teens

Clear aligners.
Clear aligners are a series of plastic, removable trays that gradually straighten teeth as they’re worn. They only need to be worn for 22 hours a day and they’re also virtually invisible! While they were previously only for adults, Invisalign Teen comes with special features like compliance indicators, which tell you if you’ve been wearing them as much as is required.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces.
This form of braces is the basis of the most discreet orthodontic treatment process. These braces are attached to the back of the teeth where they cannot be seen at all. The brackets are similar to the traditional metal braces, but they are located on the tongue-side rather than the front of the teeth. This makes them an especially appealing option for teens and adults who want to make their orthodontic treatment as discreet as possible.

What Is The Length Of Adolescent Treatment?

The duration of treatment entirely depends on the patient and his or her individual needs. The active stage of orthodontic treatment will typically last anywhere from 6-30 months. After braces are removed, a period called “retention” begins. At this point, you’ll have to wear a retainer for a number of months in order to ensure that your teeth won’t shift back into misalignment. After all this is done, your orthodontic treatment will be complete, and your new smile will be yours for the rest of your life!
