Valentine's Day Candies & Your Child's Teeth

‘Tis the season of love, also commonly known as the season of candy and sweets for our children. Valentine's Day is always a bit concerning for us dentists, so we want to help you prepare by offering tips and tricks on how to help your child get through the tasty holiday without harming any of their teeth! It is our mission to always provide top-tier pediatric care in a gentle and enjoyable environment where children can feel safe and parents can feel at ease. Our pediatric dentists and the rest of our incredible team make it a priority to ensure you leave our office with all of the necessary knowledge to promote your child's dental health and progress well from home. With offices in both Chicago, IL, and Glenview IL, we remain convenient and available to our patients.

Think Ahead

Maybe this year, your family's contribution to your child's Valentine's Day celebration can be Valentine's Day cards instead of treats. Of course, it would be ideal if all other classmates gave out cards as well, but this isn't too likely. So, in order to best monitor the candy coming in, we are happy to offer you tip on certain candies that we encourage you to monitor or even avoid completely.

What To Avoid

Generally, if you stick to these guidelines of what to avoid, your child's teeth will stay safe and healthy:

  • Candies such as Lollipops and The Like: These will essentially coat your child's teeth in sugar, making it much easier for their teeth to develop cavities and experience decay.
  • Chewy or Sticky Candies: These types of candies, such as caramel and taffy, like to stick to the teeth and can be difficult to completely remove. This can also cause decay and unwanted dental issues.
  • Sour Candies: Sour candies have extremely high acid levels which can break down tooth enamel particularly quickly and begin to erode your teeth.
