This Thanksgiving, Don't Forget Floss

This Thanksgiving, Don't Forget Floss

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and we know that means many of our patients are getting excited for a wonderful evening of relaxation, enjoying the company of family, and, of course, some truly delicious food! But as fun and healing as a great Thanksgiving meal can be, for teeth, it can pose some serious dangers. For this blog, we're going to talk about the hidden dangers behind Thanksgiving dinner and what you can do to counteract them.

The Problem Is In the Plaque

The problem starts when tiny food particles lodge themselves in the cracks and crevices on and between the teeth. Over time, this food turns into plaque, and naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth break the sugars in the food down into acids that attack teeth. The acids eat away at the enamel, causing dental decay and, eventually, forming cavities and other more serious conditions.

Thankfully, though, counteracting tooth decay is easy - you just need to brush and floss consistently and conscientiously. Brushing helps clean the teeth of any residual food particles and plaque while also disrupting bacterial growth and clearing away any acids. But brushing on its own isn't enough - without flossing, you're leaving 30% of your teeth's surface area exposed and susceptible to decay! Flossing helps to remove food from between the teeth, dislodge plaque, disrupt bacterial growth, and stimulate blood flow to the gums to combat gingivitis. Now that's something to be thankful for!
