Why Do We Need To Brush At Nighttime?

For many children, they may not understand the full depth of brushing their teeth and why it's necessary. That’s why we, the pediatric dentists and the parents, need to work hard to ensure our little patients are brushing effectively and correctly every night. When we sleep, out metabolism and saliva production slows down. And, our mouths cannot clean themselves like they usually do during the day, which creates an environment that bacteria like. We want to avoid this bacteria completely. If we are not brushing correctly before bed, this bacteria will build up to eventually create cavities, tooth decay, and other dental issues.

Maximize Your Nighttime Brushing!

As your pediatric dentist in Chicago, we recommend four easy steps to maximize your child’s nighttime brushing and flossing routine.

  • Always brush before bed: use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush every surface of your teeth for a full two minutes. Both manual and electric toothbrushes can do an effective job.
  • Brush the full mouth: bacteria can live anywhere in our mouths, that’s why it’s essential we brush the entire mouth! Be sure to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to avoid bacteria build up.
  • Floss: flossing is absolutely crucial. Bacteria can live and thrive in the small spaces between our teeth, we do not want this. Ensure your child is flossing between each tooth every night to prevent cavities.
  • Avoid eating & drinking: after you have brushed your teeth, please avoid eating or drinking anything except for water. If you do have something more to eat or drink, you will need to start your nightly oral hygiene process over again.
