Now that summer is here and school is out, it's more important than ever to make a concerted effort toward keeping those dental habits intact. Here are a few helpful tips for you to keep in mind during the summer break in order to ensure you keep your healthy smile.

Don't Forget to Brush at Least Twice a Day

This tip may seem like it should be obvious enough not to have to mention, but it's here for a reason. It's natural for most of us to have schedules that we blindly adhere to. When school is in session, brushing has a place somewhere in the morning routine before leaving for school. However, when school's out, this schedule can be thrown off and it's possible that brushing is even forgotten when given the opportunity to sleep in. Please don't forget to brush at least twice a day, preferably after meals, but whenever you can fit it in.

Wear a Mouthguard if You're Playing Sports

One of the things most commonly associated with summertime is playing sports. The American Dental Association estimates that people participating in sports will be about 60 times more likely to sustain dental injuries if they don't wear a mouthguard. If you're going to be playing sports this summer, do yourself a favor and wear a mouthguard. Our office even makes custom mouthguards that you can be fitted for to guarantee an optimal level of comfort and safety.

Plan Ahead for Vacations

Many people go on vacation during summer break which can disrupt brushing habits. This is why you need to bring a travel kit if you're going to be away from your house for at least a night. Make sure that the kit includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss so you're all set for an overnight stay.
