With so much attention being paid to the fun Halloween season during October, many people don’t realize that this month is also National Orthodontic Health Month in the United States. All month long, orthodontists and dentists across the country work to raise awareness of the benefits of orthodontic treatment and the importance of good oral health.

Our Chicago & Glenview pediatric orthodontist, Dr. Shah and the rest of the team here at Yummy Dental & Orthodontics for Kids will be doing our part to spread the word of how important it is to have properly aligned teeth and jaws. For our patients who are already in treatment, we’d like to offer up a few tips for taking good care of your braces, Invisalign, and retainers to help ensure your treatment isn’t disrupted by any unexpected problems.

Avoid Sticky Situations with Your Braces

While it may be very tempting to enjoy a sticky treat like a chewy candy bar with caramel or a handful of gummy bears or jelly beans, these types of treats can easily loosen, bend, and break the brackets and wires on your teeth.

Steer Clear of Hard Treats

One of the worst things you can do when you have braces on your teeth is to bite down on something hard and crunchy. To avoid having to visit your Chicago kids orthodontist for an emergency repair appointment, steer clear of hard foods like nuts, hard taco chips, crunchy nachos and hard-shelled peanut candies.

Be a Master Brusher!

Eating lots of Halloween sweet treats can easily lead to cavities as all that sugar is not good for your teeth. This is why you need to take your brushing up a notch by making sure you do a great job with that toothbrush of yours! If you know you’re going to be away from home for many hours, take your toothbrush and toothpaste with you so don’t have any excuses for not brushing!

Snack Wisely

Instead of reaching for snacks that are high in processed sugar, choose more tooth-friendly snacks instead of natural yogurt, soft fruits, berries or cheese.

Keep Your Appliances Clean

It’s important to keep your braces or aligners clean so they’re free of food debris and bacteria that can cause bad breath. If you’re wearing braces, do a good job of brushing in all those nooks and crannies around your brackets and wires. If you’re wearing aligners, simply brush them well when you’re brushing your teeth, then rinse them off with cool water and pop them back in. Retainers can be cleaned in the same way as aligners.
