Developing a lifelong, healthy smile requires starting young, and the oral hygiene habits you instill in your children will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Brushing teeth is a cornerstone of proper oral hygiene, but for many parents, it can be a challenging first step. The most common question that many parents ask is when should you start brushing a child's teeth? At Yummy Dental & Orthodontics for Kids, we strive to be a comprehensive resource for pediatric dentistry to ensure that your child has a lifetime of healthy and beautiful smiles. Here are a few tips on brushing your child's teeth.

When to Start Brushing a Child's Teeth

Parent brushing baby's teeth

Believe it or not, you should start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as they grow in. Use an infant toothbrush and a tiny smudge of ADA-approved toothpaste, no bigger than a grain of rice. Once your baby's teeth touch, you can begin flossing in between them. Be gentle when brushing your child's teeth, as it can be an unfamiliar and confusing process for your child. If your child doesn't like you brushing his or her teeth, try using a slip-on piece of gauze over your finger instead of a toothbrush. The idea of a parent's finger is more comforting for some children than a plastic toothbrush.

Continue brushing your child's teeth as they grow in, and when they turn 3, you can start teaching them to brush their own teeth. At this age, they should use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to brush and start brushing twice a day. You can make brushing a family routine and use it as an opportunity to teach your child the importance of caring for his or her body.
