Typically, most orthodontists will recommend that braces be worn for 18 months to 2 years; however, depending on the circumstance, treatment time can vary from patient to patient. There are various factors that contribute to the treatment time associated with straighter teeth such as the severity of the problem, patient cooperation, and the biological response to the braces. For some people, you may be advised to wear a headgear or other types of wirings in addition to the treatment. It is important that you follow your orthodontist's advice and instructions in order to complete the treatment time as planned.

Before you start your orthodontic treatment at Yummy Dental & Orthodontics for Kids, here are a few things to consider:

  • Dental hygiene: Keeping up with good oral hygiene may cut the time in wearing braces
  • Age: Studies have shown that an earlier a person start his or her orthodontic treatment, the faster the process will be. The earliest age that a patient can start wearing braces is 7, which can reduce your child's need for any surgeries or extractions as their mouth and teeth develops.
  • Type of orthodontic appliance: The type of braces you wear will have a significant effect on your treatment time. Metal braces are the most effective treatment type due to its durability while ceramic braces are slightly weaker and must be worn for a longer period of time.

Wearing braces does require some commitment, but once you complete the treatment, you will be rewarded with a beautiful, new smile. Having a straighter smile will not only improve your appearance, but also, your overall health.
