The Best Foods For Your Kids With Braces

Braces for kids can be a big adjustment - and not just the kind that occurs when your orthodontist tightens the archwire. While wearing braces, children's diets need to change. They cannot eat anything too crunchy or sticky, or bite into hard foods or they will risk damaging brackets, wires or increase their chance for developing cavities. Your Northbrook children’s orthodontist from Yummy Dental is here to give you advice on what to feed your kids with braces.

What To Eat The First Few Days Of Wearing Braces

When your child begins their braces treatment, they may experience some discomfort and have sensitive teeth. The Northbrook children’s orthodontist recommends for the first few days, feeding them foods that require very little chewing. For example foods like soup, smoothies, and yogurt. Your child can also eat soft foods like:

  • Bananas
  • Ice cream
  • Oatmeal
  • Pasta
  • Eggs
  • Pudding

After a few days, your child’s discomfort should subside as the sensitivity wears off. Then, they may resume their normal diet - for the most part.

Foods To Avoid On Braces For Kids

Your child can keep the same diet, but there will be some restrictions. Certain foods are extremely tough on braces and cause braces to bend or break. If your child’s brackets or wires break, their teeth will stop moving where they’re supposed to move to - and can even move in the opposite direction. No matter how small the break or bend in your child's braces, it will result in their treatment taking longer.

The most common foods that cause bends or breaks in braces are crunchy, sticky and hard foods. These foods not only can cause your brackets or wires to break, but some of them can also leave sugary residue in and around your braces which could lead to plaque development and tooth decay. Avoid foods like:

  • Carrots
  • Nuts
  • Caramel
  • Bread with a hard crust
  • Popcorn
  • Gum
  • Biting into fruits and vegetables like apples

The Northbrook children’s orthodontist from Yummy Dental cautions you against eating these foods and say the most harmful food your child can eat while wearing braces is corn on the cob or meat off a bone. These foods can be especially damaging and very difficult to clean out of braces. Instead, cut these foods off the cob or into bite-size pieces.

Foods That Are Best On Braces For Kids

The foods that are the best on braces for your kids are exactly what you would expect - lots of fruits, vegetables, protein, and dairy. These foods are not only good for the health of their teeth but also their overall nutrition. These foods are easy on braces and will bump up their gum health. But, be sure to cut up any fruits and vegetables that would normally require biting into.
