Yummy Dental & Orthodontics strives to be your choice when you’re looking for a Chicago pediatric orthodontist. Our mission is to guarantee a lifetime of beautiful smiles and healthy teeth for all our patients. For a lifetime of great oral health to occur though, it requires committed oral hygiene and sometimes even treatment from an early age. This is where we come in! We’re proud to offer a wide variety of orthodontic treatments for children going through adolescence in order to promote healthy, lifelong smiles.

The Optimal Time for Orthodontic Treatment

While some children require early orthodontic treatment, adolescence is generally viewed as the best time to receive treatment. Usually, by the ages of 11 to 13, kids will have lost all of their baby teeth and the permanent ones have come in. This allows us to evaluate any potential orthodontic problems and go to work in correcting any bad bites, tooth misalignment, or spacing issues.

Orthodontic problems don’t improve with age – they only become harder to treat. It’s easier to treat these problems during adolescence because a child’s body is still developing at this time. Through our orthodontic treatments and appliances, we can create an improved appearance and function in a shorter period of time. At older ages, after the patient’s face and jaw are fully developed, many orthodontic conditions actually become more costly and difficult to treat.

Finally, there’s also a social element in receiving braces at this age. Many other kids are also getting orthodontic treatment during this time of their lives so there’s more of a willingness and eagerness of going through with the process.

Our Orthodontic Treatment Options

After we’ve taken pictures and X-rays of your mouth, along with the possibility of impressions of your bite, we can develop a treatment plan that would be best for you. Some of the orthodontic treatment options that we provide include the following:

Metal braces.Metal Braces: These types of braces are the traditional ones that people are most familiar with. The benefit of modern metal braces is that they’re smaller, lighter, and more comfortable than ever. They even allow for customized options like colored elastic ties on the brackets.

Clear braces.Clear Braces: Clear braces are like metal braces, though the major difference between them is that the brackets of these braces are made of ceramic or other composite materials that blend in with your teeth. This allows for a more discreet form of orthodontic treatment.

Clear aligners.Clear Aligners for teens: These are a series of plastic, removable trays that gradually straighten teeth as they’re worn. They only need to be worn for 22 hours a day and they’re also virtually invisible! While they were previously only for adults, Invisalign Teen comes with special features like compliance indicators, which tell you if you’ve been wearing them as much as is required.

Lingual braces.Lingual Braces: This offers the most discreet orthodontic treatment process. These braces are attached to the back of the teeth where they cannot be seen at all.

Other orthodontic appliances: These may be recommended in certain cases where major tooth or jaw movement is required. These orthodontic appliances can range from small devices that comfortably fit inside the mouth to external headgear.

How Long Will I Wear Them?

This depends entirely on the patient and his or her individual situation. The active stage of orthodontic treatment will typically last anywhere from six to 30 months. After this time period, you’ll have to wear a retainer for a number of months in order to ensure that your teeth won’t shift back into misalignment. After all this is done, your orthodontic treatment will be complete and your new smile will be yours for the rest of your life!
