We work hard to create customized treatment plans that fit into our patients' lifestyles, and our team has the experience to make every visit to our office a pleasant experience even for our youngest patients. Because we offer a wide range of treatments, we're able to address almost any oral health issue right here at our office – including orthodontic problems.

Your Child's First Orthodontic Visit

Most kids will develop an orthodontic condition that requires treatment at some point in their lifetime, how can you as a parent know when to bring them in to see the orthodontist? Thankfully, the answer is easy. In keeping with the American Association of Orthodontists, we ask parents to bring children in for an orthodontic evaluation at age 7.

We won't always start treatment at this early age, but evaluating at age 7 allows our Chicago orthodontists to detect both current orthodontic problems and any issues that may come up down the line. After this evaluation, we can decide if we'd like to start early orthodontic treatment right away or simply monitor your child's growth until the ideal time to begin treatment.

Common Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic problems are incredibly common, and most fit into a set of common orthodontic malocclusions or bad bites. Here are a few of the most common orthodontic malocclusions, all of which can be fixed through braces or Invisalign:

- Excessive overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Open bite
- Crowding
- Excessive spacing

To treat these problems, we'll use braces or Invisalign aligners to gently move the teeth into proper alignment. This works because the teeth are held in place by the periodontal ligament, a structure which retains some flexibility, similar to a hammock. With constant, gentle pressure, we can effectively reposition the teeth over time and help you achieve a gorgeous new smile.

Orthodontic Treatment for Adults

Bite problems first become apparent around age 7, and most people receive orthodontic treatment during adolescence. But does that mean you're too old for orthodontics if you're already an adult? Absolutely not.

We can move healthy teeth at any age, and adults everywhere are discovering the life-changing magic of achieving a new smile through adult orthodontic treatment. Roughly 25% of our patients are adults, and no matter what stage of life you're in, if you're interested in improving your smile, we can help you do it.

Orthodontic Treatments

Traditional metal braces are the poster child of orthodontics, and they're still the most popular treatment we offer – but they're far from the only option. Advances in orthodontic technology mean there are a wide range of treatment options available, each with its own unique benefits and advantages. We're proud to offer a diverse selection of treatment options at our practice, including:

- Metal braces: The traditional method for straightening teeth. Made from stainless steel, braces use metal brackets and archwires to gently move the teeth.
- Ceramic braces: These work the same way as traditional braces, but the brackets are made from a clear ceramic composite material that blends in with the teeth. They offer a more discreet, aesthetically pleasing form of treatment.
- Lingual braces: These work the same way as metal braces, with one key difference: the brackets go on the back side (tongue side) of the teeth! This makes them completely invisible when the mouth is closed.
- Invisalign: Invisalign does away with brackets and wires entirely, instead using a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth. The aligners are nearly invisible when worn and easy to pop out for eating and oral hygiene.

Your Chicago orthodontist will work with you to help you understand your needs and choose the best possible treatment option for you. The length of your treatment depends entirely on your specific orthodontic needs, but most patients need braces for a year or two.

Wearing Your Retainer

Once you get your braces off or finish your last Invisalign aligner, you'll get to see your new smile for the first time – but your treatment isn't quite over. After the active phase of treatment, you'll begin a next step called the retention phase, which is vital to the long-term health of your smile. This is because while your teeth will be in new positions at the end of treatment, the periodontal ligament we talked about earlier won't have fully adjusted to those new positions. Without retention, your teeth will drift back to their old positions and erase your new smile! We'll fit you for you a retainer when we take your braces off, and we'll provide detailed instructions for wearing and caring for the retainer when we give it to you.
