Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

What's the minimum age for teeth whitening?

Most of our teeth whitening patients are adults, but it's reasonable to wonder if there's a minimum age for whitening. As an absolute bare minimum, it's necessary that all permanent teeth completely erupt before teeth whitening. Baby teeth don't have the chemical strength to stand up to whitening agents, and applying whitening gel to teeth that haven't erupted fully can cause uneven whitening and damage the gums. For that reason, we never recommend whitening before age 16. Even then, we generally recommend whitening for our adult patients.

How long does teeth whitening take?

Our in-office teeth whitening treatment is convenient and fast. Your whitening appointment won't take more than an hour, and in that time, we'll whiten your teeth up to 8 shades – effectively giving you a brand new smile in just an afternoon!

Can I whiten my teeth on my own?

Some pharmacies sell over the counter, do-it-yourself teeth whitening kits, but we'd advise caution. Whitening agents often use harsh bleaching chemicals that can burn the soft tissues of your mouth if used incorrectly, and in any case, DIY whitening kits can't achieve the same whitening results as in-office treatments because they can't use prescription-strength whitening agents. The only way to ensure the whitest possible smile as safely as possible is to schedule a professional teeth whitening appointment with your Chicago cosmetic dentist.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

No! We use extreme care and expertise in applying the whitening gel, ensuring it only acts on the hard enamel of your teeth. This prevents damage to gums and soft tissues and helps you achieve a beautiful, whiter smile.
